As part of the Virginia Science Festival, the institute hosted a ‘Science in Science Fiction’ writer and scientist panel on October 7, 2014, Tiffany Trent, VBI communication writer as well as young adult science fiction writer, gathered a panel of four experts to answer a series of questions “devoted to discussing the interconnectivity of science with literature and how the two influence one another,” as the Collegiate Times stated in this article:

The four panelists included Angie Smibert, young adult science fiction writer; Dr. Skip Garner, director of VBI’s Medical Informatics and Systems division; and Dr. R. H. Robinson, NSF personnel and writer; as well as Trent.
